چکیده

Laser direct processing of glass has been challenging due to the brittle nature and poor heat transfer characteristics of the material. With the advancement of ultrashort pulse lasers, laser direct machining of glass with smooth surface and free of microcracks has become a potential manufacturing technique in microfabrication of optical devices. In this paper, machining of microgrooves on fused silica substrates using a p-polarised femtosecond laser beam was investigated with regards to the groove profile and surface morphology. Microchannels with width and spacing of 20 mm were produced with no microcracks. Repeatable sub-micron gratings within a microchannel along the cutting direction were also observed. These microchannels and gratings may be used for the manufacture of optical and microfluidic devices. The beam polarisation was found to have little effect on the machining results. # 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Femtosecond micro- and nano-machining of materials for microfluidic applications

Ultrafast laser micromachining is a promising candidate for microand nano-fabrication technology. Due to the high precision of femtosecond ablation, laser-machined features can be added to devices prototyped by lithography. To accomplish that, parametric studies of laser interrogation of materials of interest are necessary. We present femtosecond laser ablation studies of glass, PDMS, fused sil...

Control of multiphoton and avalanche ionization using an ultraviolet- infrared pulse train in femtosecond laser micro-/nano-machining of fused silica

We report on the experimental results of microand nanostructures fabricated on the surface of fused silica by a train of two femtosecond laser pulses, a tightly focused 266 nm (ultraviolet, UV) pulse followed by a loosely focused 800 nm (infrared, IR) pulse. By controlling the fluence of each pulse below the damage threshold, microand nanostructures are fabricated using the combined beams. The ...

Study of the influence of femtosecond laser polarisation on direct writing of waveguides.

Optical devices were fabricated in fused silica using the femtosecond direct write technique. We found that the transmission of light through directly written waveguides, whether straight or curved, can be increased by writing waveguides using circularly rather than linearly polarised radiation.

Nonlinear space-time focusing and filamentation of annular femtosecond pulses in dielectrics

Filamentation during simultaneous space-time focusing in bulk fused silica is investigated numerically. We model the use of a pair of concentric gratings to transform a common femtosecond laser pulse with Gaussian spatial profile into a radially chirped, annular beam shape that is focused into the bulk of silica by a lens. By varying the energy and/or time-chirp of the incident pulse, we captur...

Nanoindentation and birefringence measurements on fused silica specimen exposed to low-energy femtosecond pulses.

Femtosecond laser pulses used in a regime below the ablation threshold have two noticeable effects on Fused Silica (a-SiO2): they locally increase the material refractive index and modify its HF etching selectivity. The nature of the structural changes induced by femtosecond laser pulses in fused silica is not fully understood. In this paper, we report on nanoindentation and birefringence measu...
